Album of the Week - Market Down - 05-04-2025

With the popularity of Damien's Music Week, I thought I'd try to bring some more music discussion and also try to revive the forums a bit. Wanted to start a discussion thread to discuss some of the top albums of all time (according to Pitchfork.com's readers so what do they know). They have a reader-voted top 200 albums of all time list, and I figured I'd start with 100 and work our ways towards 1.

Here is the list for anyone who wants to peruse it on their own time

Starting off with 100, we've got:

Silent Shout by Swedish Electronic Music Duo The Knife

Released in 2006, this is a synth-pop, techno, electronic album.

RE: Album of the Week - Market Down - 05-04-2025

My highlights on this album are Silent Shout, We Share Our Mother's Health, Marble House, and One Hit. Pretty out there album on some of the tracks and definitely not my favorite. I'd give this one a 6/10, there's a few skips in there

I found this album pretty alright. I think it's always difficult to talk about music like this when you're coming from a completely different side of the world, at a different time, and haven't had tons of exposure to this genre of music. I could see this album growing on me with multiple listens. Tracks like Neverland and We Share Our Mothers' Health sound like they could've inspired a band I like Guerilla Toss, and the arpeggiator on the title track reminds me of some LCD Soundsystem songs . Overall I feel like I don't fully get it but I could see myself enjoying much more with more time. 7/10 for me personally

Favorite tracks: Silent Shout, Neverland, We Share Our Mothers' Health, Like a Pen

Least favorite: Forest Families

RE: Album of the Week - Im A Bald Eagle - 05-06-2025

Definitely not my favorite album in the world, but it feels way ahead of its time in 2006.

Big fan of We Share Our Mothers' Health and Marble House.

I'm late to this cause I kinda forgot I was doing it but here I am

Our second album of the week is:

When the Pawn... by Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple's second album, this one received a Grammy Nomination for Best Alternative Album. The album's title is a poem Apple wrote in response to unfavorable reactions from readers of an unfavorable Spin cover story about her.

Fiona Apple ??? Oh you're in girl gang for sure

fr though Paper Bag was one of my favorite songs in high school, haven't heard it in years!! nostalgia go crazy

RE: Album of the Week - Market Down - 05-13-2025

Gonna give this album a 9/10. Fiona Apple has an absolutely haunting voice, in the best possible way. I'm hard pressed to think of another artist that can put that much emotion into every single track. My only complaint, if you could call it one, is that a lot of the songs on this album sound very similar- but they're all full of incredible talent, and every single one tells a story that is raw and full of feeling.

Can't give any "highlights" on this album, there is not a single skip. If I had to pick one, I really liked Limp.

This is maybe a perfect album. Fiona is a generational songwriter and is able to embed so much emotion into flawless compositions that are incredibly catchy but thoughtful. I don’t know how some extremely talented people can make music like this, especially as a solo artist, at the age of 22. I also don’t know how this album could be so low on a list like this at #99, maybe some recency bias? but this album distills everything great about the music of the 90s into the perfect 42 minute package that never loses its balance and leaves an unforgettable impression

Favorites?: A Mistake, Get Gone, I Know
