10 Years at Dinklebergs
#1
Hi guys, I figure I would pop into the forums for probably the last time. It's sad to see this community and site get quieter and quieter over the years, but I want to write a little bit for my 10th anniversary at Dinklebergs before we all inevitably go our separate ways forever.

I joined Dinklebergs in July of 2016 when my childhood come finally got DSL internet, which worked for playing real time multiplayer games. I was 13 years old at the time. It's hard to express how much fun I had, every hour on the server was an exciting moment with my friends. Even to this day I still remember almost all of it. I had a lot of cold winter mornings waking up at 7:00am when the server was quiet and hanging out & chatting with randoms on ph_office22, trying to abuse !unstuck to clip outside the window and all turn into the car. Or we'd get a group of people on a server of 20 (a lot, at the time) and turn into a bunch of cars in front of the door on motel_blacke_v3 to lock all the other props out of the building and lose the round instantly.

Dinklebergs didn't have a discord yet so we all talked to each other with Steam DMs and in game text & voice chat. Discord is pretty nice, but everybody hopping on the server to chat and hang out made it feel a lot more like home. We'd have some spicy drama going on the old Enjin forums and be discussing it with whoever was online in voicechat. When I was staff it was pretty fun gossiping in adminchat too. There were no secret staff discords or group DMs to leak or all this other crap, the drama was either on the forums visible to everyone, or you had to be there on the server. It probably sound silly, but it was truly some of the most fun I've ever had.

I racked up over 1000 hours until April 2017 when I had my "villain arc" by getting banned and going and running a bunch of competitor servers. Not the best way to end that saga, but the server was changing a lot in 2017, a lot of old regulars were going away, and I was getting burnt out on it. I did meet a ton of friends over on 4th Life, Kraxens Wrath, [cG], and those other seedy joints. Around 2021 I came back and have been somewhat hanging around ever since, but I've never been as passionate about this place as I was those first few months. The drama was more intense, the server politics were more... political, and this place had grown out of the close-knit corner of the internet I loved into more of an over-moderated Facebook page.

A hard to truth to understand and realize, sometimes something really good comes into your life and changes you for the better, but as you change, that thing changes too, and you grow apart from it. You don't want to let it go because it impacted you so much, so you try and hold on, but the more you hold on and try to rekindle that old fire, the more melancholic and "weird" you feel about it that thing. So you start to let it go. This doesn't come as a sudden "I'm leaving Dinklebergs!" forum post or some dramatic exit like a lot of people do... you just have different things going on in your life that start to take its place. IRL friends, a growing career, aging parents, more responsibility at the family farm, new projects and life goals. You time starts to become limited by your goals and responsibilities, and you have to be more intentional on how you're living your life. In that vein, more and more often you stop choosing the option to participate in the old online community you feel like you grew out of 5 years ago, in favor of spending time with your grandmother or learning piano or whatever, until you stop thinking about it completely. Well, that was me last year, and probably the year before... but I'll never really forget Dinklebergs, not those first 10 months anyways. So this thread is my "not forgetting."

Yap session over, got a little deep but hopefully didn't geek out too hard. Take care everyone, I can't speak much for the next 10 years, but I can only hope the best for the members of Dinklebergs that have come, gone and remained over the last 10.

One last thing though, the names of all the prophunt OGs I remember, their names are forgotten to most (because prophunt is boring) but I'll remember them here while I can. I'll probably still miss some unfortunately...
