slurs are bad to say because of the implicit threat of violence that they carry with them. you cannot yell the n word at a black man because for so many of them, it was the last word they ever heard. when you use homophobic slurs, you are invoking a history wherein people would roll gay men up in carpets and light them on fire. the word cracker implies that you are the person who holds the whip. there's nothing threatening or tragic about being the man with the whip.
