Hate to say this but you shouldn't apply for staff if you have to juggle real life. the most important metric for promotion responses is activity. if people have seen you around they are more inclined to give you a +1. even if you aren't on, especially if you aren't on as much, try to make a (good) splash. the next thing that people tend to give a -1 for is not standing out.
Some of this stuff you unfortunately have to learn the hard way.
