Hey gang,
I made an extension for Chrome and Firefox so that you can hide elements around the homepage, and a couple of them work within subforums. It should work for both themes as well!

Here’s an example:

For example, the sidebar on the right is completely gone and the rest of the site expanded to take up the now unused space. Also, the logo and navigation links at the top are missing because I hid the navbar.
Here is the popup by itself:

The only thing I couldn’t get working on the homepage was adding a toggle for the tsarvar embeds.

Feel free to suggest things or make contributions either on here or github! I provided my GitHub repository below.

The first thing I said when I was going for forum staff was we were going to bring rep back everywhere. As a few of you may have noticed, after a bit of convincing our bosses, and them fighting off the ghosts of Web Admin's past, it's back! This will come with some stipulations. The only reason it's back is we have a web staff team that is highly communicative, and very invested in the forums, so part of the deal was that we'd be a lot more heavy-handed with enforcing the rep manipulation/abuse rules as it has been historically used to be pretty shitty to people, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Please, for the love of God, just don't abuse it. I'm just going to link the old post about it below from the last time it was brought back, have a look, the same rules apply now. If you have any questions about this change, this is the post to do it on.

Slowly going blind reading the forums late at night? Tired of borderline unusable desktop layout on mobile? Look no further than the official Dinkleberg-sanctioned dark theme: Volare.

Gabe already made an announcement about this when we first made it available here, but seeing some comments asking about a dark theme made me realize we don't have any official guide (it's easy I promise).

Easiest Way!!!

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the Quick Theme Select dropdown. Select Volare from the dropdown

More Annoying Way :/

1) Go to the user control panel using the dropdown in the navbar

2) In the sidebar under "Your Profile", select "Edit Options"

3) Under "Other Options", use the "Board Style" dropdown to select the Volare theme

That's it, now you have dark forums. It's not quite as refined as the Flow theme is, but it's largely usable. I use it exclusively and don't typically have problems.

If you spot any issues (bugs, illegible text, ugly layout, etc.), please make a post in Website Suggestions, or reach out to me directly.

For those that do not know, Web Mod applications are different and we are a small team, meaning that I am not going to accept more than a few. Our largest team size was previously 4 web mods and we currently have 2. If you get "denied," it may not totally be your fault. So please do not take it personally as there are only a limited amount of spots. I will give feedback on applications. Team dynamics is something that will also be considered heavily since it is a small team that works closely with the Admins.
Please check out the format here and apply if you are interested and meet the requirements, keep in mind the highly preferred and recommended requirements too since those are significant factors.
Applications will be open until 4/17/24 at 11:59 CST, but the deliberation process may last longer depending on how many applications are received.

We have heard your complaints about excessively lengthy quotes. Long quotes will now be automatically collapsed and can be manually expanded, and manually re-collapsed. Sorry this took a while!

As proof here's a long quote:

long response to response Wrote:
long response Wrote:
long quote Wrote:Delving into the nuanced intricacies of online forum etiquette, the importance of judiciously snipping replies emerges as a cornerstone in fostering an environment characterized by clarity, coherence, and optimal user engagement. In the sprawling landscape of the digital realm, where ideas traverse the information superhighway at breakneck speeds, the act of trimming responses assumes a role of paramount significance, akin to a skilled topiary artist meticulously shaping a verdant hedge into an aesthetically pleasing form.

The impetus behind the advocacy for snipping replies lies in the collective pursuit of a streamlined and digestible user experience. A forum, in essence, serves as a communal agora where ideas converge, diverge, and intermingle in the digital agora. As participants engage in spirited discourse, the readability and accessibility of these conversations become pivotal in ensuring that the exchange of thoughts is not marred by the labyrinthine convolution of prolix responses.

The act of snipping, in its essence, entails the artful excision of extraneous details or redundant information from a response, akin to a literary sculptor chiseling away superfluous marble to unveil the elegant contours of a masterpiece. This meticulous paring down serves a dual purpose: it facilitates a more efficient conveyance of ideas, allowing readers to glean the essence of a message without wading through a quagmire of verbosity, and it cultivates an environment where brevity is not sacrificed at the altar of verbosity.

Furthermore, the importance of snipping replies extends beyond the mere expeditious transmission of information; it is an exercise in fostering active and meaningful engagement. In a digital milieu where attention spans are increasingly ephemeral, a judiciously snipped response stands as an inviting oasis amid the desert of information overload. It beckons readers with its succinct allure, encouraging them to partake in the discourse without being daunted by the prospect of deciphering an unwieldy wall of text.

However, it is imperative to strike a delicate balance, for the art of snipping should not devolve into the draconian excision of substance. The essence of the original message must be preserved, and the act of trimming should be conducted with surgical precision, ensuring that the coherence and integrity of the response remain intact. A finely snipped reply is akin to a well-crafted haiku—concise, impactful, and resonant.

All this is to say, the importance of snipping replies in the context of online forums cannot be overstated. It is a nuanced dance between conciseness and substance, a choreography that harmonizes the need for clarity with the imperative of fostering dynamic and engaging digital conversations. As denizens of the virtual agora, let us embrace the art of snipping, sculpting our contributions into elegantly trimmed responses that not only convey our thoughts but also enrich the collective tapestry of online discourse.
While the ethos of snipping replies in online forums is extolled for its purported benefits in promoting conciseness and facilitating an efficient exchange of ideas, a contrarian perspective beckons us to scrutinize the potential drawbacks that might lurk beneath the surface of this seemingly laudable practice. It is incumbent upon us to explore the nuanced terrain wherein brevity contends with substance, and the call for snipping, like a siren's song, may lead us astray into the treacherous waters of oversimplification.

To assert that snipping replies is an unassailable virtue is to potentially overlook the inherent richness that verbosity can bring to a discussion. The art of articulation often requires a canvas broad enough to accommodate the nuanced strokes of an elaborate argument or the intricate brushwork of comprehensive elucidation. An overemphasis on brevity, while aiming for expeditious communication, runs the risk of sacrificing the depth and thoroughness that more expansive responses can offer.

Furthermore, the inclination toward snipping responses may inadvertently foster a culture of oversimplification, where complex ideas are truncated into bite-sized morsels, potentially diluting the substance and nuance of the original message. The intellectual landscape of online forums should be one that embraces diversity in communication styles, allowing for both succinct and extensive expressions of thought. Rigidity in favor of brevity may inadvertently stifle the flourishing of intricate discussions, reducing the digital agora to a realm of superficial soundbites.

The call for snipping also raises questions about inclusivity and the potential exclusion of voices that thrive in the expansiveness of thorough exploration. Not all ideas can be neatly encapsulated within a predetermined character limit, and imposing such constraints might inadvertently silence perspectives that require a more comprehensive elucidation. In the pursuit of brevity, the risk of homogenizing discourse emerges, potentially stifling the vibrant tapestry of diverse thoughts that should be the hallmark of any thriving online community.

Moreover, the emphasis on snipping replies presupposes a universal understanding of what constitutes superfluous information. What may be deemed extraneous by one might be pivotal context for another. The subjectivity inherent in discerning relevance may lead to the unintended consequence of miscommunication or the omission of crucial details that could have enriched the discussion.

In conclusion, while the clarion call for snipping replies in online forums echoes with the resonance of efficiency and clarity, it is imperative to tread with caution and recognize the potential pitfalls that accompany an uncritical embrace of brevity. The dialectic between succinctness and substance should be approached with a discerning eye, acknowledging the inherent value of both concise expressions and more elaborate discourse. The digital agora thrives when it accommodates a spectrum of communication styles, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where ideas can flourish in all their multifaceted glory.

In scrutinizing the counter-argument against the virtues of snipping replies in online forums, it becomes apparent that while acknowledging the potential merits of verbosity and the preservation of intricate details, the foundational principles advocating for brevity in digital discourse remain robust and well-founded. Let us meticulously address the salient points raised in the counter-argument, delineating the continued importance of snipping responses for the collective betterment of online forums.

The counter-argument posits that an emphasis on brevity may overshadow the richness that verbosity can bring to a discussion. However, it is pivotal to recognize that the call for snipping does not necessarily advocate for the obliteration of detailed and nuanced arguments. Instead, it encourages a discerning approach, wherein individuals strive to distill their ideas into a more digestible format without sacrificing the core substance. Snipping, when done judiciously, becomes a tool for refinement rather than an instrument of wholesale truncation.

Moreover, the notion that an inclination towards snipping responses fosters a culture of oversimplification overlooks the inherent flexibility within this practice. Snipping does not inherently negate the possibility of comprehensive expression; rather, it encourages a focused and impactful presentation of ideas. It is about striking a balance between succinctness and substance, not an outright rejection of depth. By encouraging contributors to distill their thoughts, snipping seeks to enhance clarity and accessibility without mandating a reductionist approach.

The counter-argument raises valid concerns about inclusivity and the potential exclusion of voices that thrive in the expansiveness of thorough exploration. However, it is crucial to note that the intent behind advocating for snipping is not to suppress extensive discussions but to provide an option for individuals who may prefer a more streamlined consumption of information. The digital agora, at its zenith, should be an inclusive space that accommodates a spectrum of communication styles, and the call for snipping is a proposal to enhance the overall dynamism of the discourse.

Addressing the concern about subjectivity in discerning relevance, it is important to emphasize that the art of snipping is not a one-size-fits-all prescription. It necessitates a certain level of subjectivity, a nuanced understanding of context, and a keen awareness of the intended audience. The practice of snipping, when guided by thoughtful consideration, becomes a mechanism for refining communication, ensuring that messages resonate with clarity while retaining their substantive core.

In conclusion, the rebuttal to the counter-argument underscores the nuanced nature of the discourse surrounding snipping replies in online forums. It reinforces the idea that the call for brevity is not an absolute mandate but a suggestion to elevate the efficiency and clarity of communication. By recognizing the intrinsic value of both concise and extensive expressions, the online community can evolve into a vibrant and inclusive space where ideas flow seamlessly in a harmonious amalgamation of brevity and substance.

Still maybe worth manually snipping very long replies so they're easier to follow when expanded, but we at least won't have stupidly long quotes clogging up threads.

This is an *extremely* late forum small update post butttt

1) There is a new theme we will be testing out called Volare. There are almost certainly going to be some kinks to work out still (I know of one or two), but @reina @Ryan722 @lacer and myself worked on it a lot. So thank you guis! It should at least be functional. If you have any feedback post it here

2) I removed all the dumb themes that are broken or are.. dumb (netpen, mybb mobile, and another I forgot the name of)

3) I got Dinkleman to update mybb and other stuff on the backend (we were outdated in a lot of things). This is why you all saw the "Click to Edit" bug for like a few days

Hello! We're going to be testing another forum feature. This feature will randomly quote posts from threads. The thread it quotes from will likely change every other day. The quote changes every time you reload the page. I intend to do threads related to the community's lore, since that will be fun. Hence why it is called "Dink's Lore."

You will be able to find this feature under the "Staff Online" module. The only downside of this feature is that if you quote replied to someone, it'll show what you quoted as if you said it originally. I'll see if I fix that. The first thread is addressing toxicity. Let's see how this feature works over the next few days

Hello guis,

I stumbled across something neat and decided it would be cool to test out. It's pretty straightforward, 5 threads will be pinned under this section so they do not get buried or lost. Threads will rotate in and out.

The primary purpose of this is so events, giveaways, and important announcements do not get buried. As there won't always be enough to fill all 5 slots, I thought it'd be cool to put some fun threads in here as fillers for however long. So we'll be bringing back praise the person above you, dad joke of the day, and making a story as the first rotation. No, there is no set amount of time these threads stay in rotation. Obviously, when events or giveaways end they will be removed. Or when enough time has passed for an important announcement.

I plan to bring back "roast the person above you" next as a filler once Rand's event or the vape giveaway end. Or if some of the other fun threads die out. If you have any other suggestions for a new fun thread/old ones, let me know. (They must be fun, harmless, and lighthearted).

ummm yeah that's pretty much it, like I said it's a beta test so expect some issues with how it may look on some themes. I decided to put it at the top for now but I can change the position of it to be under Latest Posts, Staff Online, etc.
The purpose of this post is to lay out some changes & updates I plan to make to the forums in the coming days and some potential ideas for 2023. I am a fan of remaining simplistic and not complicating things, so I don't intend to add many things that aren't simple.
Rule Changes: The forum rules have been slightly updated to address outdated items and simplify them. I'll post a summary below with a full changelog to follow later. This is a work in progress, it's not completely done yet.

Miscellaneous Changes: Simplified wording of Flaming/Harassing Members and Alt Account Sections

Necroing old threads: This rule is sort of outdated so it needed updating. I deleted most of this section since it's redundant now because threads automatically lock after a month. I kept the part that said that if someone is looking to revisit a topic, they should make a new thread about it.

Shitposting: Added these parts below. My goal is to have harmless shitposting be less of a crime. This still means no obvious shitposts in staff apps or anything serious, those need to have a +1 or -1 and I don't really care what you say after. If you're looking to give serious feedback you should say something meaningful because that's a major factor in decisions for staff apps/unbans and should be a majority of posts on those threads, as it is now. A majority of shitpost threads should remain in the shitposting section to not clutter the recent threads, but occasional joke threads are fine as long as people like engaging with them.
A Note on The Reputation System Going into 2023
This is going to be the bluntest thing on this thread. I want to reiterate that I think some people take rep too seriously. Since it's a new year, let's start the year off with a new mindset around reputation. It should not be taken that seriously. If anyone is afraid to comment because of caring too much about their reputation, then I frankly think that's their own fault.

If it's creating an environment where people are scared to post and defeats the purpose of why the forums is used(i.e feedback on applications, an opinion on a thread, etc) then it's not worth keeping rep around if it's doing that. So I believe removing rep could be a good thing if this is an becomes a widespread one. Don't make it one in 2023. As Battons said before, if it becomes a nuisance or a problem he'd remove it. I intend to keep that pledge as well. But I'd rather not do that as a first option and would find alternatives/compromises first. So just a warning, don't take rep seriously and don't manipulate someone's reputation.
To preface, I do not think this is a pressing issue that needs urgent attention, this is just me brainstorming. I don't care that much about internet points, but if we're going to have them then they might as well be productive.

Currently, reputation simply translates to how many posts you've made and how many people liked them. In most cases, it's used to circlejerk popular opinions and brigade unpopular ones, or it's simply given freely to every post from someone a user likes and taken from every post from someone a user dislikes. In my opinion, this not only means reputation has no constructive meaning or value, it also encourages herd mentality of people simply agreeing with the most popular voice without bothering to form their own opinion or engage in the conversation constructively. This is not necessarily a criticism of the community, but of the inherent effects of the current reputation system. My goal with these ideas and this discussion overall is to change reputation from a popularity score to a measure of a user's engagement with the community.

The following ideas are listed roughly from least to greatest in how impactful I think they would be as well as how difficult they might be to implement, though admittedly I don't know a ton about web development. While these may or may not work well in tandem with each other, they are for the most part presented individually and not necessarily intended to be implemented all at once.

A) Show reputation from the past month on users' posts as well as total reputation.
This information is already viewable on a user's profile, this suggestion is to simply make it more immediately visible. I feel that recent activity is more important than activity from months or years ago, though past reputation is still relevant, so I think both should be shown on posts to more easily gauge someone's involvement in the community when reading their post. Something like "Reputation: [recent reputation] ([total reputation])"

B) Make likes/dislikes on posts visible only to the poster (and forum staff).
This would prevent likes/dislikes from influencing the course of discussion, as users would not be able to see which opinion has the bigger score to agree with and would be more encouraged to form their own opinion and engage in the conversation more constructively. This could potentially be a timed effect, with the scores being shown after a day/few days/however long.

C) Limit reputation changes to 1 per user per thread.
What I mean by this is that each user can only affect each other user's reputation once per thread, based on the sum total of likes and dislikes from that individual user. For example, if 3 users each individually liked more posts than disliked from you in a thread, you would receive +3 reputation for that thread, instead of the total sum of likes from each post. This would better represent your overall engagement in the thread, rather than how many times you posted that people liked. This would likely require some form of reputation reset as it would change the proportions of scores, but hey, it's just internet points right?

Share your thoughts, opinions, takes, concerns, questions, ideas, and rep manipulations in the comments.
