A Modest Proposal
#1
Hello Dinks community, regarding the recent changes to the Awarn/staff guidelines revisions I have some quick suggestions I'd like to discuss. Below are 3 suggestions for the guidelines themselves, and the fourth is actually less-so related to guidelines but still something I'd rather not make an entire different thread over, so I lumped that in here.

1) Up the pedophilia jokes/conversation to 10 points, as it stands right now it is still 8 points. The reasoning behind this is that when the warning system was implemented, the most severe issues were not meant to expire for a very good reason. They were meant to be appealable, but not expire. I think this may have been an oversight and would like that to be addressed if possible.

2) Separate overly sexual topics and bring it back to 8 points. I'm not sure why this was combined, but I think given that sexual topics are not welcome here above the pg-13 threshold, especially that minors could be playing at any point. I think this should be taken with a little more severity as compared to other offensive topics. I think increasing the points issued with this will discourage harmful conversations that could affect our underage players.

3) For similar reasons stated above, NSFW profile pictures should be increased to 10 point warning after verbal warnings are issued to that player. Again, the assumption is that you're on a server with potential underage players, and people unwilling to adjust their pfp should not be welcome here. Think of it like exposing someone to pornographic material, just a huge, gross no-no.

4) Discontinue the usage of zero point trolling warns and instead utilize 0 point warnings in place of verbal warnings. That way, staff have easy access to keep track of verbal warnings and repeat offenders will not fall under the guise of avoiding rightfully earned warning points. I think this is the biggest beneficial suggestion to the staff team and will help moderate the server in a much more organized, professional, but most importantly fair way. With 0 point warnings, It will be much easier for problem players to not get away with whatever it is they're doing to cause issues, as well as being able to utilize staff discretion to not over moderate players.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk and i hope you all have a wonderful day! Post thoughts below!

Great suggestions, especially the 0 point warn ones I think can help with moderating what happens a lot. More trouble happens when the server is busy too so seeing a warn distinguished from talking over everyone or in text chat can increase the visibility of it.

The first 3 are definitely good in terms of severity, usually the people that say those things do it habitually so a stronger first offense will make it known they may be like that and can show them it isn’t tolerable

I also really like the 0 point suggestion, if verbal warnings are being phased out of the staff team and moving towards more reliance on the warn system is set in stone, having a way to give a “knock it off” on record without a recording or separate message in the staff discord to be lost in a sea of texts is a great idea.

thanks for the feedback, i'll order my thoughts by number because quoting is annoying on mobile

1) The 8 point warn for pedophilia jokes/conversations is specifically for lower severity offenses, that while
taken seriously are not typically intended to majorly cause harm. With the lowered first threshold and increased duration of 8 point warns, I felt this was a good compromise for people to have a 2nd chance after an extended time while still receiving immediate punishment. More severe cases are meant to be dealt a permaban, and I removed the old 10 point warn preset deliberately to encourage a stronger distinction between the two and to reduce some confusion there was around it. I'm not opposed to upping it if this is a common sentiment, but there was some reasoning behind it.

2 & 3) Sexual conversations were reduced to 6 points to help staff feel more confident in giving the warn out when applicable without being unsure if it's warranted, as I've seen happen a few times. This is especially true with the lowered first threshold. Both rules have notes to be enforced more strictly when minors are present. Once again not something I'm opposed to changing, just my thoughts behind it.

4) I've considered this before, but some people tend to get riled up when they see the scary warn text even if it's minor. I've recently started encouraging staff to use the player notes in the awarn menu to log verbal warnings and I'll give that some more time to see if that holds up, but if not we can look into using 0 point verbals.

many people tend to get away with warnings when they know different staff is on. This would be a good change but im not sure about everything else. Staff usually know when to warn and when they just need to take stronger actions and upping the points aren’t going to change that.

Wouldn’t the warn text make them take it more seriously? Some people don’t see a verbal warning as like they got away. Think like a cop let you go with a verbal warning. You always ask yourself how are they even going to enforce said warning when its not guaranteed its going to be them next time. The warn text might warrant a change in their actions showing them what they did was for sure wrong and that all staff are going to know.

Now about the player notes does every staff actually look at those? It might be a different issue but you might have to get on them to look at the player notes although i’m not really sure how it’s formatted. It sounds like a separate thing but I could be wrong.

With regards to point 4, I feel that logging verbal warnings is good for anyone whose been on the server more than once. I agree, anyone whose been around for some time, who knows better, shouldnt be shielded from the scary public text that they will likely disregard.
I do think someone joining for the first time who isn't familiar with our rules on trolling or spam may benefit from a staff DM to remind of the rules/etc before issuing a warn. I will not forget the micspam warn I was issued within 2 minutes because I somehow had 2 mics routed to my Gmod when I first joined.
